Two Voices: Shared Perspectives
Collaborating on a design project, Margery and Beverley realized they shared a common vision of artistry and beauty. A lovely friendship began. More recently, their creative talents turned to painting. Although their styles differ, they sometimes get together to paint, share ideas, critique each other’s work and learn from each other.
Music of the Spheres by Margery Koop
Just like, as a kid, I couldn’t help singing to the rhythm of the wringer washer or the windshield wipers, I can’t help but infuse music into my art now. I studied several pieces of my art recently and realized there was a pattern emerging – my mark-making was distinctly musical, although not intentional. I saw notes, stems and staves floating in space or a sweep of the brush as if I were conducting my choirs. Or bursts of red and orange on the canvas which I could only describe as a crescendo of heightened emotion. Music is in my bones and this series was a natural outpouring of my musical self onto canvas.
Margery Koop, a Winnipeg artist, came to making art from a lifelong career in music as a singer, teacher and choral conductor as well as a clothing designer. She paints mostly abstract using acrylics. Margery expresses herself through vibrant colours and texture, building a painting layer upon layer, often allowing what’s underneath to show through, rubbing off fresh paint or scratching through the layers.
Layers by Beverley Zimmerman
For this series I found that incorporating different shapes of fabrics and other materials helped lead me away from my usual more realistic style, to something I wanted to explore: a more abstract and impressionist style. The layers created patterns and texture that inspired me further in an intuitive artistic direction. From neutrals, to colours, with a few realistic touches continuing to sneak in, I try to achieve balance and variety, with the fabric layers being the common element.
Bev is a Winnipeg artist whose passion is observing the beauty around her, and sharing it with others through her art and careers. Floral design, drapery fashion, and presently design and decorating have all made use of her talents. Recently Bev has been more dedicated to painting artwork. Experimenting with many styles in acrylic, she feels that sharing her gift of art, in whatever modality she uses it, is a privilege
